Rachele Fitz Named ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic All-American (2010-02-23)

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior forward Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) was selected as a Third Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday.

A fashion design major, Fitz is the 10th Marist athlete to be named Academic All-American in school history. She is also the second Marist athlete to be named Academic All-American this school year joining men's soccer player Joe Touloumis.

Fitz earned her second First Team Academic All-District selection this season, and has been named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's All-Academic Team twice. The Red Foxes' all-time leader in games played, points, and rebounds, Fitz currently leads the MAAC with 17.7 points per game and a 56.6% field goal percentage.

It was announced on Sunday during Marist's women's basketball Senior Day ceremony that Fitz will be the first Marist women's basketball player to have her number retired. The jersey retirement ceremony will take place at a home game during the 2010-11 season.

To be eligible for this honor, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. For Academic All-American status, a student-athlete must first be named First Team Academic All-District.
